Showtime Boxing host Brian Custer sat down with seven-time NBA All-Star Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers in a tell-all interview that touched on his preferred trade destinations, his future in Portland, Ja Morant’s troubles, Victor Wembanyama’s future, his pick to win the NBA Finals, his love affair with boxing and more in a timely discussion on Custer’s popular The Last Stand podcast.

A die-hard boxing fan, Lillard breaks down the anticipated undisputed welterweight championship between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford on July 29 on Showtime PPV and gives his wish-list of other notable fights he wants to see.

The subject of frequent trade speculation, Lillard also speaks on his future in Portland and his preferred destinations if he’s traded.

Here’s a sampling of sound bites from Big Game Dame in his wide-ranging interview with Custer:

On the sense of entitlement of players within the NBA…

“I would say entitled is the right word. But I don’t think it’s necessarily [the players’] fault alone. It’s the culture that’s being created…We talk about Wembanyama like he’s the greatest prospect ever across sports. It’s like, okay, when he comes in, what do you think he’s going to expect? Whether he believes it or not, this is what everybody is saying he is before he even touches the floor. You don’t have a choice. He’s the guy. He’s a franchise player…It takes away that fight that you got to have to earn your stripes and earn what’s given to you. When you don’t have to go through that process, it ends up kind of hurting some people because then you just expect things to happen.”

On one change he would like to see the NBA make…

“If I was the commissioner, it would be mandatory to have two vets on the team. I’m talking about real vets like how Miami has Udonis Haslem. He can play if they need him to play, but somebody that’s been around. Somebody that guys have to respect. Almost like a father figure on the team because guys are coming into the league so young, and they have all this money. It’s almost like they get everything and it’s a dream come true, but they’re exposed to a lot of things that can put you in a world of trouble.”

On which team he would be happiest to be traded to…

“Miami, obviously (laughs). Miami is the obvious one. And Bam [Adebayo] is my dog.”

On the fight he would most like to see in boxing after Spence-Crawford…

“I would like to see David Benavidez and Canelo. I think that’s the one. Obviously, the background of being Mexican fighters in boxing is legendary, period. I think with David, people have kind of gotten on to him. Now they see him, and they’re like, ‘The Mexican Monster,’ he deserves that name. What he just did to Caleb Plant. Caleb Plant is like a high-level fighter. I think people want to see it. Mexican fans want to see that. And they love Canelo, but they’re like, this is who he needs to get in there with. Honestly, I think that’s the next major fight after Bud and Spence.”

On his top-five pound-for-pound boxers in the world right now…

“Bud, Spence, Tyson Fury, Inoue, and Canelo. I’d probably say that’s top five.”
